WPD Technology & equipment

The types of technology and equipment used by the WPD has changed and increased significantly since 1974. Multiplied by a department that has almost doubled in size during that same time period, the aftereffect is an enormous amount of technology and equipment and an enormous amount of space needed for its use and/or storage. Because it was not designed to accommodate any of those things the net result is a severely overcrowded 44 year old building. These photos reflect a small fraction of that technology and equipment and a small fraction of the space it occupies.

Electronics are currently located throughout the building but are most noticeable in the Dispatch Center.
Originally designed for one Dispatcher who performed his work with paper, pen, typewriter and 2 telephone lines, today the room is packed with
more than 10 computers, more than 15 monitors and a myriad of other electronics.

Offices, workstations and other available surfaces are filled with electronics.
A shelf and counter in the break room are home to portable radios, body cameras and their charging stations.

Because storage rooms have been lost to other purposes or are full, some equipment can be found in hallways. Items currently stored in the rear hallway include but are not limited to:
- medical equipment
- automated external defibrillators
- hazardous materials equipment
- tactical gear
- radar equipment
- license plate readers

Because space is not available inside the building, the garage must be used for storage, eliminating its regular availability for vehicles. Items currently stored in the garage include but are not limited to:
- individuals officers' work bags
- medical bags
- hazardous materials equipment
- child car seats
- Police bicycles for Bike Patrol Unit
- bulk quantities of janitorial and maintenance supplies
